When I first started cloth diapering my daughter around three months old, I opted for all-in-two diapers as the largest portion of my stash. As my daughter has grown, I have experimented with other types of cloth diapers, leaning towards covers with some sort of insert as my top preference. Although I previously purchased one cover with a prefold diaper, I had not ventured much into the world of prefolds. Thus, when Real Nappies offered me a chance to review a cover and cotton prefolds, I eagerly accepted the opportunity.
I received a pink snug wrap diaper cover in crawler size (17 to 30 pounds), a six-pack of Indian cotton prefold cloth diapers, and two rolls of bioliners (200 liners in total). My daughter currently weights 26 pounds, so the cover fits her perfectly. The prefold diapers also work great inside the Real Nappies cover as well as many of my other covers. The bioliners work inside all of my various diapers and diaper covers.
Snug Wrap Diaper Cover, Pink
The snug wrap diaper cover from Real Nappies is made from a water absorbent PUL fabric to remove moisture and keep Baby drier. Similar to other covers, the snug wrap can last several diaper changes before heading for the diaper pail. Soft, elastic leg binding contains moisture and messes while preventing leaks, and adjustable velcro waist tabs ensure a snug fit. On the front inside of the cover is a sizeable flap that helps prevent the prefold or other insert from moving around inside the diaper. Laundry tabs prevent the velcro from sticking to other diapers during washing.
Although I generally prefer snap closures on my cloth diapers, I have not had any problems with the velcro on my Real Nappies snug wrap cover. Because my daughter is still wearing bottoms due to the cold weather, she has not had the opportunity to unfasten the velcro on her own. I may be a little more cautious about using the velcro cover on her during the summer in case she decides to escape. However, I do like that the velcro means a snug, customized fit around her waist. The velcro also attaches firmly and does not unfasten until the next diaper change. My only complaint is that the tabs do not stay attached during washing, so I often find the velcro stuck to another part of the diaper after the final rinse cycle.
I also generally prefer double leg gussets but have had no problems with the single elastic on the legs of the Real Nappies snug wrap cover. The elastic is super stretchy, forming the perfect barrier between my daughter and messes. I have yet to have a problems with leaks with the cover. The cover perfectly contains both pee and poop from diaper change to diaper change.
Regularly priced at $12.99, the Real Nappies snug wrap cover retails on the lower end of comparable diaper covers. However, as a sized cover, you will need to upgrade to a larger size as your baby grows. Real Nappies offers four sizes of covers from 6 pounds all the way up to 40 pounds. I am not keen on buying different sizes of diapers, preferring one-size diapers instead. However, the price at which Real Nappies covers retail is definitely not prohibitive for the sized model. I also like that Real Nappies offers newborn sizes all the way up to larger toddlers.
6-Pack of Indian Cotton Prefold Cloth Diapers
I previously have tried only one diaper cover with a prefold diaper. I neither liked nor disliked the style. However, after receiving the six-pack of Indian cotton prefold cloth diapers from Real Nappies, I have ungraded prefolds to a style of diapers that I like. Prefolds are versatile, easy to use, and much cheaper than many other options. The Indian cotton prefold cloth diapers from Real Nappies consist of 100% natural Indian cotton sewn together for superior absorbency and are certified to the highest Oeko-Tex ecological standards. The natural, soft cloth diaper inserts are comfortable to wear and naturally breathe. Real Nappies prefolds are free of chlorine bleach, plastics, and chemicals.
To use my Real Nappies Indian cotton prefold cloth diapers, I simply fold the prefold into thirds and lay the folded diaper inside the cover. I have been using the prefolds not only in my Real Nappies snug wrap cover but also inside many of my other covers. I cotton is super soft but also absorbent. I have had no problems with either moisture or solids. The prefolds contain both securely inside the cover. At $35.99 for the six-pack, each prefold costs approximately $6 each, making the style of diaper an economical choice for frugal parents and parents on a budget.
Real Nappies Diaper Liners Twin Pack, 200 Sheets
When my daughter occasionally needs diaper cream for a slight rash, I always use a liner made from an old wash cloth or a flannel cloth wipe to protect my cloth diapers. However, over time, the cream has built up on some of my liners. Recently I discovered that I can add a disposable liner over the cloth liner for extra protection against the cream. The bioliners from Real Nappies are perfect for putting diaper cream on my daughter.
The twin pack of Real Nappies bioliners consists of two rolls of 100 sheets totaling 200 easy tear off, perforated diaper liner sheets. Real Nappies diaper liners are made of renewable Ingeo fiber, are luxuriously soft, and are fully biodegradable, chlorine-free, fragrance-free, dye-free, and chemical-free. Liquids to pass through the liner while capturing solids for easy disposal. The liners are flushable or compostable. At $18.99 for the twin pack, each liner costs only $0.09.
I love the softness of the bioliners from Real Nappies. The only time that I use disposable liners is when my daughter has a rash, so the extra softness is appreciated against her irritated skin. I am eager to try composting the liners once the weather warms up. For many homes, the liners are flushable. However, because I have enough problems with my older plumbing system, I am hesitant to flush the liners for fear of major problems. Regardless, the liners work great to protect my cloth liners and the rest of my diaper from sticky rash creams.
Final Verdict: I am extremely pleased with the prefolds and diaper cover from Real Nappies. The cotton prefolds are soft against the skin while absorbing plenty of moisture. The covers combined with the prefolds help prevent leaks and messes through snug leg elastic and adjustable velcro around the waist. Although I prefer snap closures on my diapers, I have had no problems with the velcro on my Real Nappies cover. The biodegradable liners are also super soft and help make diaper changes a breeze. Real Nappies are reasonably priced. If you are in the market for prefolds and sized covers, I highly recommend Real Nappies.
